Patients referred for a private gastroenterology assessment will be invited to an initial outpatient appointment and will be offered a bespoke care package as directed by the symptoms, which may involve endoscopic procedures or imaging tests.
We also offer access to private endoscopy lists for patients on NHS waiting lists for colonoscopy, gastroscopy (including nasal gastroscopy), sigmoidoscopy or capsule endoscopy.
We offer services for medically insured and self-pay patients. All hospital profits generated from private work are re-invested in NHS services, for the benefit of Somerset's population.

At Somerset Endoscopy and Bowel Health Clinic, we offer a private service within Somerset's largest district general hospital offering patients access to state-of-the-art NHS services.
Our lead consultant, Dr Daniel Pearl, is an experienced consultant gastroenterologist with a passion for delivering bespoke patient-centred care. His attentive analytical style and partnership approach to patient management underscore his practice. He has developed subspecialty expertise in bowel cancer screening colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy / colonoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, clinical nutrition, advanced therapeutic endoscopy and is director of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in Somerset.​​​

The new centre - called - King's Building - includes eight operating theatres, six endoscopy rooms and a 22-bed intensive care unit, providing modern facilities for both patients and colleagues while creating additional capacity to help reduce waiting times for treatment.

Outpatient Consultation

New outpatient appointments last 30-40 minutes.

Follow up appointments last 15-20 minutes.

All new appointments are face to face to allow for clinical examination, with the option of virtual appointments for follow up.

All clinic appointments are supported by dedicated nursing staff.
Ultrasound, CT, MRI, X-rays, PET and nuclear medicine scans are carried out at Musgrove Park Hospital, though some scans are arranged at Taunton's Diagnostic Centre.
We usually see patients who have been referred to a specialist by their GP or private insurer, but you can arrange an appointment directly (supported by a referral letter if you need to see a gastroenterologist).
We can help with digestive disorders due to a range of conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, BAM and SIBO.

Payment Options
Private Medical Insurance
Dr Pearl is fee assured with all major medical insurers (BUPA, AXA PPP, AVIVA, HEALIX, VITALITY, WPA, CIGNA and their affiliates). This means his charges are in line with insurer's recommendations. Some insurers sell policies which recommend specific hospitals or consultants within a network. This is a commercial decision and bears no relationship to the quality of care patients receive. If you would like a consultation, please discuss with your medical insurer. Alternatively, your GP will be able to submit a named referral to Dr Daniel Pearl. Please be aware that you are responsible for any excess costs that your insurer does not cover, just like any insurance policy. We will ask for your insurance membership number and authorisation code when you book. A referral from a recognised UK registered health care professional is required before your appointment is confirmed.
Self Pay Patients
Self pay patients can access up to date costs for outpatient consultations with Dr Pearl on the PHIN website, or alternatively by submitting an online enquiry. Self pay costs for hospital treatment (including blood tests, endoscopy procedures and radiology tests) is available by contacting Parkside Private Patient's Unit directly. For both hospital treatment and outpatient consultations, payment is required in advance.
